every once in awhile E gets a call from a local temp agency asking him if he wants to work a crappy job. the last job he worked was with the OK tax commission. it think there was taping W2s involved. well, he got a call on thursday and they offered him a job for the city of edmond doing lawn mainetance, weed eating, etc from 7am-5pm making $5.70 an hour. keep in mind, i realize it's a temp job and not a tremendous amount of skill is required but it's 104 degrees outside and they are only paying $5.70 an hour for someone's time. and they did advise him to bring water.
it's been interesting because i've been struggling with this. if he works, he makes money which helps save money and buy things we need. but 104 degrees seems so horrible and to only make about $40 bucks a day before gas and any expenses. and then i feel bad because i realize someone people are forced to work that - they have no choice. i've told E no, that there is no reason he should subject himself to that for that little money and tell them why. it's just been very interesting to ponder.
and then on the late night oprah, she interview morgan spurlock about 30 days on minimum wage show. it was really interesting and sad. but forces me to continue to ask why people are forced or choose to live with such low pay. and what are the culture, educational or societal issues that impact their lives.

62 minutes...
and i'm free. this has been a long week but yet it's a short week. i often wonder if shorts weeks seem really long because we know they are short weeks. hmmm.
anyway, tomorrow i'm off work to celebrate e's big birthday. it will be a good time.
tonight i'm back to night 6 of my swimming class. i'm learning a lot and hopefully will put my freestyle to serious use soon. last night, i ventured back to the gym for a little running. i ran/walked about 2 miles and i'm sad to say i am sore today. but my back feels fine. i've set my eyes on a race in august - here are the details, if anyone wants to join in the fun. i'll run/walk/crawl, whatever you want or can do. i just want someone to come along.
Race with the Bulls - Stockyards
August 19th @ 7:30

Seriously, there will be grilled beef after...you can't beat that.
you may notice that i've changed my scenery. it was time. but i need to do some customization. i've also ventured over to myspace to set up an account. why? you might ask. i really don't know but i thought it might be fun and a good way to connect to my gen y/millenial friends.

why do i care?
so i must apologize for my last irrational post. i was upset.but i'm still equally as frustrated, not so much angry as just frustrated. the day only got worse really.
i want to do a good job. i want to produce quality stuff. i want to be a part of a vision. a vision to do something more than the status quo. i want to shake things up. look at things from a different perspective.
my leadership does not understand these ideas and consistently chooses to not chase them. and often sabotages their staff.
i will never be happy there. i ask myself often if i made a mistake. i don't think that i did. i am more baffled at what to do next and trying to avoid looking back. i have ideas, i have dreams but i lack the skills, the money and free health insurance.
soon. just hang in there. life always works it's self out. it's odd that way.
and then i ask myself...why do i care so much? it's just a job, these are not my friends, i don't have to have an emotional attachment towards everything. but i do. i can't help it.
sigh.
photo stolen from here.
at this very moment...
I HATE MY JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
am i being dramtic? throwing a hissy fit? aware of my irrational behavior? yes, yes and yes.
should i be thankful i have a job? yes again.
do i care right now. no.
i work at the most ridiculous place. how can a group of educated professionals lack such basic skills. such as... communication skills. please let me point out that i work in the communications department. errrrrr.

wimmen of the world...
i heard a story on npr last week that i thought was really interesting. the interview was with John Morse, president and publisher of the Merriam-Webster Dictionary about the first Webster's dictionary. This led me to find this information at www.merriam-webster.com.
Two hundred years ago the company’s namesake, Noah Webster, created A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language—the very first dictionary to reflect the unique culture and vocabulary of the American people. Along with introducing a reform of British spelling, the volume included thousands of words (chowder, hickory, skunk) which were in daily use in America but not listed in any other lexicon.
Noah Webster was struck by the inconsistencies of English spelling and the obstacles it presented to learners (young and old alike) and resented that American classrooms were filled only with British textbooks. The spelling reform featured in his Compendious Dictionary of the English Language was based on the author’s combined vision of logic and aesthetics. He changed the –ce in words like defence, offence, and pretence to –se; abandoned the second, silent “l” in verbs such as travel and cancel when forming the past tense; dropped the “u” from words such as humour and colour; and dropped the “k” from words such as publick and musick. The “publick” readily accepted many of these changes and just as readily rejected some of the others.

just another tuesday...
the primary election is being held today in OK. holy moly...i hate elections. a constant stream of bad tv ads and telephone recordings. today i saw a sign on a truck that said "grandmas for calvey." and my favorite is mary fallin - her tagline is "i believe in faith, family and freedom." well alrighty then.
for those of you in OKC i'm thinking about doing some light weight races in the next couple of months. mostly to give myself a goal to work towards. let me know if you are interested. an upcoming event that looks somewhat entertaining is Run with the Bulls in the stockyards. It is a 5k and 1 mile fun run on august 19th.
and lastly as a member of the mtv generation i thought this article was interesting.
I Want My A.D.D.
How 25 years of MTV have changed the world (for better and worse).
MTV famously claimed its first casualty with its premiere video, aired August 1, 1981. But since video killed the radio star, what has the network accomplished? You know, besides forever changing youth culture and foisting Carson Daly on the world. Here, on the occasion of MTV’s 25th anniversary, we look at some of the more notable accomplishments for which the network can be thanked—or blamed. more

Random 10
21st Century Kid – Jamie Cullum
99 Luftballons – Nena
Summertime Blues – Eddie Cochran
Meanwhile, Rick James – Cake
I Will Follow – U2
Spirits of the Material World – The Police
Time – Embodyment
Cautioners – Jimmy Eat World
Dead Wrong – The Fray
Father and Son – Leigh Nash
I’ve been posting quite a bit of random fluff lately so I thought I would give you an update on some things.
My back – I have been feeling fantastic lately. There is still some sensitivity in my lower back and I can’t do certain things like lay on my back for long periods of time but for the most part my whole back feels great. On Wednesday I went to the chiropractor and my range of motion is completely normal (when I first stated my range of motion was horrible) and I’m going to start seeing him every two weeks as opposed to every. He suggested I continue doing exercises that build my core muscle group which support my lower back. Hopefully if all goes well, I will start seeing him every month. Thank goodness…the chiropractor is expensive business. But to all you medical doubters…the chiropractor was a really good thing for me.
My craziness – I’m still tossing around the idea of going to see a counselor but am a bit apprehensive. I have gotten so much great feedback from my previous post and my rambling about it but I’m still scared of it. Scared of the additional emotional stress to come out of it – I know in the end it would be a good thing but I’m not sure I’m ready for the in-between/deal with 30 years of emotional baggage. Since I am a state employee we have an employee assistance program and I’m thinking about meeting with someone from there. They can give me a referral and help with all the insurance specifics. I just have to make the phone call which seems easier than it is. Mostly because I work in a cube and I can just imagine my co-worker hearing me say “I’m calling because I’m emotionally imbalanced and need some help.” Ok, so that’s a bit extreme but I’m not ready to deal with this head on…yet. But one thing I do know for sure…the issues may stay quiet for a while but they always come back.
My job – My boss is still a flake. There hasn’t been any crazy chaos with the resignation of our big boss but the future looks promising for a little chaos. I’m about to wrap up a couple of major publications for high school students and I’m pretty happy with them.
My eating – Seriously, I’m just trying to be good and do the best I can. I had such good intentions with the point counting and it lasted about 3 days. But I’m trying and I suppose that’s what matters. And really if I can stop the poundage from coming on…it’s a good day.
My exercise – Still swimming (learned the side and back stroke last night) but I realize I really need a tangible goal. And the only thing I can come up with is races. So I’m thinking about participating in Race for the Cure. Maybe walk it and focus on doing half of my cardio with walking and the other with swimming/cycling/elliptical. I really, really want to start running again. I wonder if I could incorporate a little running. Maybe I could try it a little and see if it affects my back? You would think coming up with a good fitness plan would be easy for me but I swear I over think it. Much like everything else I do in my life…
My husband and dog – E is turning 30 next week and there are big birthday plans at the Jones’ house. There will be a little Ted’s, an outing to see “Lady in the Water,” a day off work for me, too much cheap pizza and a CD or two. Blu continues to shed and hump like a wild monkey. We’ve also been forced to have him wear his bark collar. I’m not sure how something can be so funny and so horribly mean at the same time. But it works. A couple barks in and he makes a horrible sound and then growls very quietly. He knows how loud he can bark before it zaps him…so funny yet so sad.
My weekend – I’m leaving town this weekend. Woo-hoo, not another weekend of too much tv, too much sleep and too much snacking. I’m going to see my friend Alida in Fort Worth after work tonight. I’m not sure what the weekend will hold but there be obnoxious laughter and a trip to IKEA.
And on Sunday I’m going to meet-up with another old friend Kate. Kate and I met in Statistics at UCO about a million years ago or maybe around eight. It should be a good time.
Have a nice weekend...I hear rain is coming.

Internet = too much pop culture for me
So, what’ll it be? After a generation out of print, the original Choose Your Own Adventure series is back. First published in 1979, the books let readers remix their own stories – and face the consequences. A quarter-billion copies sold worldwide as kids raced to discover lost civilizations, navigate black holes, and go in search of … the Yeti. This summer, eight of the original titles return to bookstores, revamped with 21st-century references (cell phones!). Will they become popular again? (From wired.com and thanks to Amber for the tip)
Blah, blah, blah. Brad and Angelina. But seriously this photo is stunning.
Proof that there should be rules about the types of people that can marry and pro-create. There is a pregnancy rumor…oh my.
Unusual Fish Caught In Texas
A fisherman makes a very unusual catch at Buffalo Springs Lake.
Late Tuesday afternoon, a fisherman hooked a fish he says he`s never seen before and lake officials are just as amazed: a 20-pound fish with what looks like human teeth.
Please, please watch this video and translate for me. It should link to the fish with teeth video.
Ok, that's enough for today. I'm off to get a wisdom tooth removed this afternoon. Wish me luck.

wwIII
so my radio alarm goes off this morning and the first thing i hear is "this is wwIII." "wwIII is taking place in the middle east right now" what? i know that this middle east drama is not a good thing, is it ever? but seriously, wwIII?
so in my slumber i decided that i should stop ignoring the news and figure out what's going on with israel and a place called lebanon. thus far when asked what's going on, my only response has been "i don't really know specifics but i think people shouldn't screw with israel. they don't mess around." but i realize this isn't a very intelligent response. so i did a little reading this morning and here's a brief history if anyone is interested.
History of the Lebanese-Israeli conflict
By The Associated PressMon Jul 17, 9:23 AM ET
A brief history of the Lebanese-Israeli conflict:
Because Israel and Lebanon have never signed a peace accord, the countries remain officially in a state of war that has existed since 1948 when Lebanon joined other Arab nations against the newly formed Jewish state.
The two countries have been bound by an armistice signed in 1949, which regulates the presence of military forces in southern Lebanon. more
all i know is that if this crazy fighting keeps up and people keep predicting wwIII...i feel sorry for all the suv owners in the world. this can't be good for gas prices.
speaking of suvs - this weekend i was thinking about how sports cars used to be all the rage. eveyone wanted a gt this, or something zx but now it's all about the suv. i don't even know what cool sports cars are anymore. but then again i do drive an echo and almost everyone i know drives a honda or toyota.
so onto other business. i watched transamerica this weekend. i liked it ok. i honestly was a little bored at one point but overall i think it did a great job of incorporating a very odd, unique character but not focusing only on that. no moral or political statments - just a story.
but i think it was bad that i knew so much about the movie because in the end i knew there was a woman playing a transexual. And at no point did i forget. I think ultimately you wanted to forget that it was a he or a she and just a person. but i always knew it was a she trying to be a he wanting to be a she. if that makes sense...
and some random thoughts -

- i love red robin.
- why is it so flippin hot?
- did you know the show alice was based on a movie? i loved that show when i was kid. kiss my grits. alice doesn't live here anymore - i caught it on pbs this weekend.
- i am addicted to swimming now - or at least the idea of learning how to swim. i figure once i try to make it exercise all the fun will leave.
and finally after much rambling. it's the monday question. recently this has been discussed by my co-workers. i say yes, likely because i married my opposite and i'm not sure two of me would do anything but worry.
Do you believe that opposites attract?

some kind of a funk...
today i slept until noon, took a brief nap, watched way too much tv, accomplished about a 1/4 of what i wanted to accomplish and ate about twice as much as i should have.
not my best day...

thank goodness for goggles...
i'm really enjoying my swimming class. yesterday i learned proper breathing for the freestyle stroke. and let me tell you what...it's hard. staying above water is hard enough and then you throw in trying to learn all the proper technique...whew. but i think i'm enjoying the challenge. tonight i went and bought some goggles and headed to my neighborhood pool. the goggles make all the difference. i'm hoping to get back to the pool again this weekend.
speaking of weekend. no big plans. E is in kansas. i've got transamerica to watch and i'm excited to see it. i also have season one of entourage which i know nothing about.
this morning i made hotel reservations for our trip to NYC in december. hotel prices are ridiculously high and i found one that was reasonable so i decided to jump on it. now i just need to get serious in my moola saving efforts. send all odd jobs and cash making ventures to eddie@radialangel.com
happy weekending.

i just don't know about this...
i heard a story on npr a few months ago about a movie called The Confederate States of America and here is a synopsis - Bold, satirical and wildly funny, the film poses the question: What would have happened if the South had won the Civil War? Played as a straight-faced Ken Burns-style documentary with uncanny parallels to our current society, CSA presents an alternative modern day America as a land in which slavery is alive and well throughout the 50 states, other non-whites and non-Christians are relegated to reservations, the country is in an ongoing Cold War with Canada and a Slave Shopping Network plays on TV. In the words of Spike Lee, an Executive Producer, the film is "eye opening and jaw dropping."
anyway, it's playing at the OKC Museum of Art and i was thinking about checking it out. have any of you seen it? i'm intrigued but also very apprehensive.
slow day today. not much going on. tonight i'm heading back to the pool. i must admit i'm enjoying doing something new. new is good.

a question for wednesday...
an important discussion that took place at my recent professional conference...
crunchy cheetos or cheese puffs (also known as cheesy poofs)?
this random conversation led to a little googling and i've learned this little tidbit of pop culture.
Cheesy Poofs are a snack similar to Cheetos in the animated series South Park. The name is a play on "cheese puffs" (a real snack) and "poof". The theme song for them is:
I love Cheesy Poofs
You love Cheesy Poofs
If we didn't eat Cheesy Poofs
We'd be lame!
Cartman has a great love for Cheesy Poofs. Cartman can frequently be heard saying "Yeah I want Cheesy Poofs" in the first season. In one episode, Cartman became the spokesperson for Cheesy Poofs after successfully singing the theme song.
crunchy cheetos or cheese puffs (also known as cheesy poofs)?
this random conversation led to a little googling and i've learned this little tidbit of pop culture.
We'd be lame!

swimming 101
tonight was my first swimming class. good times.i didn't know what to expect. well i am in a class with eight people and four of them are women who are afraid of water and uncomfortable swimming in the shallow end. compared to them - i am an expert. ok maybe not but i am advanced. hopefully next lesson i will move away from the flutter kicks and swimming with various floating devices and onto some strokes.
but i was reminded of something tonight - swimming is harder than it looks and is an incredible cardio workout.
i've spent the last couple of days at western hills lodge near wagoner, ok - for those of you are okies that is south of tulsa. it was a good conference and a good time with co-workers.
and there were also a bizillion deer which leads me to this tidbit of news that i read last week. what is wrong with people?

movies and more movies
i really liked junebug - it was awkward and strange but i really related to it. not to the huge amount of sex the central couple had but more to the role of the son. i am very familiar with feeling like an outsider to my family and wanting to avoid being around them. but all the while being conflicted (and feeling guilty) about my relationship with them. and in the end, always stepping up and being the good daughter/granddaughter.
but i really did think it was funny - mostly because i could see family members in the characters. and i loved the church scence.
tonight at the dollar movies i learned that i love akeelah. i thought it was a nice, uplifting movie. a poor girl from LA beats the odds. i feel better about the world. was it reality? doubtful. could it ever happen? maybe.
i thought it was interesting that the principal encouraged her to participate because it could bring good press to the school which might lead to more money so they could afford basic supplies and up keep. probably a realistic commentary on inner city schools that are forgotten by the burbs.
tomorrow i'm off to wagoner,ok for a work conference. yep, wagoner. i know there's a lake and possibly a sonic. if i'm lucky there will be an old school walmart. so i will likely be mia for a couple of days.
this is my sister and nephew on the 4th. aren't they beautimous? that's a word my grandma
taught me.

Friday 9:05pm
and i just got home from a walk with blu. exciting, seriously exciting i tell you.
sometimes i really enjoy walking. especially the times when i'm feeling very introspective. i ponder things, i analyze my psyche, all sorts of deep meaningful things. i've actually been feeling this way the last couple of days - which sometimes is a good thing but other times it's an exhausting emotional time for me. i've yet to come to determine what the result will be of this episode of introspectiveness.
i hate my job. i like my co-workers and the work i do is ok but i really don't like the job. it's not home. i feel like when i'm there i have to be something else. a part of the dysfunctional system with bad motives. it's boring, stuffy and there is nothing creative or interesting about it. therefore sparking nothing or creative or interesting out of me. there is more to me and i don't know how long i can stay there. i've told myself a year...i'm going on eight months...surely.
and then there's the whole idea of looking for a job...which is the worst evil?
on another topic of my introspectiveness. i'm thinking about seeing a counselor. i have some serious emotional issues stemming from my family background. i've tried to deny them, i've tried to address them by myself or with friends but i think i need a professional to guide me. i know what's wrong and i can generally find the root of the issue but i can't seem to get over the hump of dealing with the issue.
all of this started at work yesterday with a baby conversation which led to a family conversation which led to me stating outloud (i know it's horrible) that i don't like my mother. and it's true. i don't like her and if i were really honest i would say that i have some deep seeded hatred or anger towards her. which is odd because she was the good, consistent parent.
i've also been thinking a lot lately about how i have disconnected emotionally from most of my family. my mother, my grandparents, anyone that is attached to the emotional baggage i carry, i disconnect from. come on...this isn't healthy. and then i realize anyone i know, anyone, any of you reading this, i feel as if i am one step away from emotionally detaching from you. literally at any given moment i feel as if i could walk away. i don't but i always have this retreat feeling in my gut and i hate it.
on to a lighter topic. points. i'm doing ok. yesterday i went over by quite a bit, today i'm doing ok. while i was on my walk i realized that i hadn't eaten any protein today and was convincing myself that i really needed protein - ignoring that i've used all of my points. at one point i was thinking a bean burrito was a good option. deep down though i know that fast food never equals good option. fast food always equals bad.
i'm going to watch junebug tonight. i will let you know my thoughts.

must work soon...
I am happy to report that I stayed within my points yesterday. There were some strawberries around 9pm last night that were unexpected but I went for a walk and earned some extra pointage. And they are a fruit after all so they can’t be that bad. As my friend Amber says, “I didn’t get this size by eating too much fruit.”
This morning I had a huge fight between the good Christie and the bad Christie about picking something up on the way to work. I really wanted a snazzy coffee drink but I was able to convince myself that I couldn’t afford the points or the cash. And then there is the baby shower this afternoon. I have to budget for cake points because let’s be honest – I’m going to eat some cake.
E is off traveling this week so I slept about 5 hours last night. Eeeek. It’s a little disheartening to realize that I will never settle into this E is here/E is gone routine. Ultimately I’m beginning to understand that things will always be a little chaotic for us – I think it’s in our personalities and I go back and forth whether I think it’s a good thing.
And to you renewed point counters – one day at a time.

how odd.
"Chocolate Factory" theme park to open in Amsterdam
Fri Jun 30, 11:43 AM ET
Amsterdam will get a theme park dedicated to chocolate and inspired by Roald Dahl's children's book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," city officials and entrepreneurs said Thursday.
Just like Dahl's fictional "Chocolate Factory" owned by Willy Wonka, the main part of the "sweets park" will be located underground, in a disused railway tunnel which was handed over by the city of Amsterdam in a ceremony Thursday.
The attraction, which is expected to open to the public in two to three years, will feature a glass elevator and a chocolate fountain, similar to the book. It will also produce small amounts of chocolate.
"Ten years ago I made a radio play of the 'Chocolate Factory' and ever since I've been fascinated by it," said audio books publisher Maurits Rubinstein who started the project.
The city of Amsterdam and Dutch construction company BAM are supporting the plan, which will cost 20 million euros, partly raised with bonds that parents and grandparents can buy for their children and grandchildren.
Amsterdam is the world's biggest cocoa port, processing around 30 percent of the world's cocoa beans from countries like Ghana and Ecuador. It supplies the key ingredient, cocoa paste, to major chocolate manufacturers throughout Europe.
Amsterdam is also the place where Coenraad Johannes van Houten invented the hydraulic cocoa press in the 1820s, enabling the production of eating chocolate alongside the already available drinking and cooking varieties. He also came up with the process known as "dutching" to create a mildly flavored cocoa powder that mixes more easily with water.

how many points is that?

Where:
p = Points
c = Calories
f = Fat Grams
r = Dietary fiber Grams
I never thought of it as a formula. It's just like Algebra.
Yeah, I’m officially back on the point counting wagon. I stepped on the scale last night and it was bad, granted I had eaten a lot yesterday and was wearing clothes and it was night but it was bad. The number it showed was a number I haven’t seen in a really long time. It crossed over into another zone. So yeah, I’m back and have got to find some control.
I did an official weigh in and I’m tracking my points like a hound dog tracks a crazed criminal. What an analogy, huh? Sadly, I only have 6 points remaining of my daily 20. But I did spend about 10 on Pei Wei so I don’t feel too bad or disappointed.
It worked once…surely it can work again.
My holiday was nice. Oddly enough though I spent most of my time in small towns and I don’t really like small towns. Maybe I will fill you in on the Piedmont parade later. And I’ve also decided I need some family decompression time – between Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, the Memorial Day trip to Corpus Christi and the past weekend – I need a seriously long break of freedom from people who share my genes.
